Samantha and Nicole Humphries, recent graduates of Flower Mound High School in Texas and multiple-time national track champions, have made headlines once again, this time for signing a Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deal with Hoka Running. The dynamic duo, who boast impressive times of 2:06.59/4:39.11 (Samantha) and 2:06.24/4:43.51 (Nicole) in the 800m and 1600m respectively, will join Hoka's roster of NIL athletes as they prepare to embark on their collegiate journey at the University of Oregon.
However, before they transition to the collegiate level, Samantha and Nicole have set their sights on a different kind of victory: advocating for NIL rights for high school athletes in their home state of Texas. Despite Texas being a powerhouse in athletics, its current legislation prohibits amateur/high school athletes from marketing and profiting from their NIL, a restriction that sets them apart from athletes in 33 other states.
Speaking passionately about the need for reform, Samantha Humphries emphasized the importance of NIL rights for athletes, stating, "An athlete’s NIL refers to not only their talent and skills in sport but, above all, their identity and value as a person. Every athlete deserves to own their hard work and reap the benefits. Most importantly, every athlete deserves to own the brand they wear for themselves every day. Who you are is ultimately your NIL. As a result, Texas high school athletes are missing out on the individual liberty and empowerment others are empowered to take off."
In partnering with Hoka Running, Samantha and Nicole hope to use their newfound platform to amplify their voices and advocate for change. By leveraging their status as elite athletes and champions, they aim to raise awareness about the importance of NIL rights and push for legislative reform in Texas to ensure that future generations of athletes have the same opportunities for success and empowerment.
Hoka Running, known for its commitment to innovation and excellence in the running community, shares Samantha and Nicole's vision for a more equitable future in sports. Through their partnership, Hoka aims to support the Humphries sisters in their advocacy efforts while also providing them with the resources and opportunities to continue excelling in their athletic pursuits.
As they prepare to represent the University of Oregon on the track and field team, Samantha and Nicole Humphries stand as shining examples of resilience, determination, and advocacy. With their sights set on achieving greatness both on and off the track, they are poised to leave a lasting legacy not only in the world of athletics but also in the fight for athlete empowerment and equality.
